It works, it just isn't compatible to control the inverter.
Unfortunately, the older Links series remotes and battery monitors will not communicate with the newer Freedom 458 or Freedom marine inverters. You can replace the whole unit, or just add the Freedom basic remote and retain the older Link as a battery monitor.
The following model numbers will work with all Freedom inverters (black or white chassis): Freedom basic remote (84-2056-01) Link 1000 (84-2019-02) Link 2000 (84-2000-06) Link 2000R (84-2005-04)
If your Freedom basic remote's serial number is below 822, it will not be compatible with a new inverter.
If your Link 1000's serial number is below 2200, it will not be compatible with a new inverter.
If your Link 2000's serial number is below 8500, it will not be compatible with a new inverter.
If your Link 2000R's serial number is below 5000, it will not be compatible with a new inverter.
Many clients who replace the inverter and find that their control panel is not compatible with the new inverter choose to retain use of the Link battery monitor and add the Freedom basic remote to control the inverter rather than replace the whole system.
